Gliese 221 is a red dwarf star in the constellation Orion. At 66 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 9.70. It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 40.3 km/s relative to the Sun. Its projected Galactic orbit carries it between 16,800 and 24,500 light years from the center of the Galaxy. It came closest to the Sun 277,000 years ago when it had brightened to magnitude 9.29 from a distance of 55 light years. Gliese 221 has two confirmed planets known to date (July 2013).
