Gliese 179 is a type M3 star in the constellation Orion. At 40 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 11.94. It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 21.8 km/s relative to the Sun. Its projected Galactic orbit carries it between 20,900 and 27,200 light years from the center of the Galaxy. Gliese 179 has one confirmed planet know to date (early 2012).
