Y Sagittarii (HIP 89968)

Y Sagittarii is a yellow-white bright giant star in the constellation Sagittarius. At 1,652 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 5.75. It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 19.1 km/s relative to the Sun.

Sky position: RA 18h 21.4m, Dec -18° 51.6'

Common designations: Y Sagittarii, HR 6863, HD 168608, HIP 89968, Gaia DR3 4096107909387492992

Y Sagittarii has the spectral type F8II. F-type stars are yellow-white stars of about 6,000 to 7,500 K, slightly hotter and more massive than the Sun. Their hydrogen lines are weaker than in A stars and metal lines become prominent. Its luminosity class II marks it as a bright giant, more luminous than ordinary giants.

How to find Y Sagittarii in the sky

Y Sagittarii lies in Sagittarius. With a declination of -18° 51.6', it is visible from the entire Southern Hemisphere and from the Northern Hemisphere up to about latitude 71° N. It is bright enough to see with the naked eye under dark skies. It is highest in the sky at local midnight around July, which makes the weeks around that month the best time to observe it.
