Caph (HIP 746)

Caph is a white giant star in the constellation Cassiopeia. At 55 light years away, it is the 75th brightest star in the Earth's sky, where it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 2.28. Caph is the primary component of a multiple-star system and an intrinsic variable star that varies between magntitudes 2.34 and 2.38 over a period of 2.4 hours. The star's age is estimated to be 900 million years but is certainly no less than 800 million years and no greater than 1 billion years. The iron abundance of Caph is +0.03 (107.2% of the Sun). It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 44.2 km/s relative to the Sun. Its projected Galactic orbit carries it between 21,800 and 27,000 light years from the center of the Galaxy.
