HD 9026, a yellow-white giant star in Sculptor
HD 9026 is a yellow-white giant star in the constellation Sculptor. At 451 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 8.11.
HD 9026 (HIP 6866)
HD 9026 is a yellow-white giant star in the constellation Sculptor. At 451 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 8.11. It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 38.3 km/s relative to the Sun.
Sky position: RA 1h 28.4m, Dec -31° 29.7'
Common designations: HD 9026, HIP 6866, Gaia DR3 5016771463883723136
HD 9026 has the spectral type F2III/IV. F-type stars are yellow-white stars of about 6,000 to 7,500 K, slightly hotter and more massive than the Sun. Their hydrogen lines are weaker than in A stars and metal lines become prominent. Its luminosity class III marks it as a giant: an evolved star that has left the main sequence and swollen to many times its original size.
How to find HD 9026 in the sky
HD 9026 lies in Sculptor. With a declination of -31° 29.7', it is visible from the entire Southern Hemisphere and from the Northern Hemisphere up to about latitude 59° N. Observers poleward of latitude 59° S see it as circumpolar: it never sets. It is just beyond naked-eye visibility; binoculars will show it easily. It is highest in the sky at local midnight around November, which makes the weeks around that month the best time to observe it.
