Iota Chamaeleontis, a yellow-white giant star in Chamaeleon
Iota Chamaeleontis is a yellow-white giant star in the constellation Chamaeleon. At 188 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 5.36.
Iota Chamaeleontis (HIP 46107)
Iota Chamaeleontis is a yellow-white giant star in the constellation Chamaeleon. At 188 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 5.36. It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 53.1 km/s relative to the Sun.
Sky position: RA 9h 24.2m, Dec -80° 47.2'
Common designations: Iota Chamaeleontis, HR 3795, HD 82554, HIP 46107, Gaia DR3 5195912625655712512
Iota Chamaeleontis has the spectral type F3/5III/V. F-type stars are yellow-white stars of about 6,000 to 7,500 K, slightly hotter and more massive than the Sun. Their hydrogen lines are weaker than in A stars and metal lines become prominent. Its luminosity class III marks it as a giant: an evolved star that has left the main sequence and swollen to many times its original size.
How to find Iota Chamaeleontis in the sky
Iota Chamaeleontis lies in Chamaeleon. With a declination of -80° 47.2', it is visible from the entire Southern Hemisphere and from the Northern Hemisphere up to about latitude 9° N. Observers poleward of latitude 9° S see it as circumpolar: it never sets. It is bright enough to see with the naked eye under dark skies. It is highest in the sky at local midnight around March, which makes the weeks around that month the best time to observe it.
