171 Puppis is a white main-sequence star in the constellation Puppis. At 50 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 5.36. The star's age is estimated to be 12.2 billion years but is certainly no less than 9.2 billion years and no greater than 14.4 billion years. The iron abundance of 171 Puppis is -0.78 (16.6% of the Sun). It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 162.6 km/s relative to the Sun. It came closest to the Sun 60,000 years ago when it had brightened to magnitude 4.76 from a distance of 38 light years.
